Toxicology Researcher

Toxicologists study the harmful effects that new medicines, chemicals and products can potentially have on human health.

They work in higher education, industry, clinical environments and government bodies.  Toxicology is an integrative science and academic toxicologists carry out research within multi-disciplinary teams. Some toxicology researchers also teach undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Duties:

  • Carrying out controlled studies in a laboratory environment
  • Establishing regulation frameworks for toxic substances
  • Publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals and papers
  • Giving presentations to fellow scientists
  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students of pharmacology

Career Path

To work in toxicology research in higher education you would need to have a PhD in toxicology or related subject, such as molecular biology. Your next step would be to carry out postdoctoral research in your field of expertise in a university laboratory.

On gaining experience, you could secure further roles as a research fellow/associate or combine your research with teaching as a lecturer.

Salaries

Research posts in toxicology are generally fixed term for the duration of a project.
Salaries range from £34,304 to £50,296 for research fellows, senior research fellows and lectureships in toxicology, depending on the nature of the research and your qualifications and experience.
