Pharmacy Research Jobs profile

Pharmacy research jobs include the study, design, usage and delivery of drugs and medicines in a university laboratory. Their research plays an important role in driving the pharmaceutical industry and informing public health strategy.

If you’re going to use your PhD in pharmacy as the start of your academic research career, there are a variety of multi-disciplinary opportunities available.

Pharmacy practice researchers can also be qualified pharmacists who have chosen to undertake clinical doctoral research studies.

Duties:

  • Planning and conducting research in a specific area of pharmacy practice
  • Publishing results and outcomes
  • Working in a team of scientists dedicated to drug discovery and usage.
  • Supervising junior researchers (research associate roles)
  • Teaching and assessment of undergraduate and postgraduate Masters of Pharmacy students (lectureships)

Career Path

If you’re considering an academic career in pharmacy research, there are several routes you can take. You may already be a qualified pharmacist who is following a clinical research route through a Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship (CDRF) scheme, which combines working as a pharmacist while carrying out doctoral research. Alternatively, you may decide to undertake a non-clinical PhD in a related subject following completion of your MPharm degree.

On gaining your Ph. D., your first step would be to secure a position as a clinical or non-clinical research fellow/associate in pharmacy research or, more likely, combine research activities with teaching MPharm students as a lecturer in pharmacy practice.
