Katie Sharrocks Academic Spotlight Interview

Katie’s journey into academia came from her love of learning. She enjoys the freedom to delve into her research with the opportunity to learn something new everyday. Inspired by Jennifer Doudna, one of the pioneering women to be honoured with a Nobel Prize in the sciences, Katie aspires for her research to contribute meaningfully to the lives of individuals with medical conditions like Parkinson’s and Schizophrenia.

She is currently a PhD student at Imperial College London. Katie’s research investigates G-protein coupled receptor oligomers. She’s specifically working on dopamine receptors which are usually found in the brain, her PhD involves uncovering how these receptors interact with each other.

Using a combination of biochemical and structural biology techniques, Katie’s PhD project aims to elucidate the precise interactions between protomers in GPCR homodimers and oligomers. Katie hopes to achieve her goal of contributing and paving the way for improved medications for those suffering from Parkinson’s and Schizophrenia through increasing understanding of these receptors in her research.
