Different types of student support jobs

Different types of student support jobs

Did you know that there is a wide range of student support jobs available within universities? You could have the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of young people and help them succeed.

Student recruitment

Working in student recruitment can be an exciting and rewarding role. If you work as part of the admissions team, you could organise open days, meet prospective candidates, and represent the university at overseas student recruitment events. Most universities have a dedicated marketing team. You could be involved in promoting the university’s academic courses and attracting talented candidates from the UK and internationally. You can find the latest vacancies here.

Course administration

Universities need efficient administrators who manage timetabling, coordinate assessments and examinations and respond to students’ queries (just to mention a few areas). You will be able to interact with students and faculty from a wide range of backgrounds. There may be great career opportunities in this field. You could take up leading teams or projects if you wish to progress your career. Find current vacancies here.

Accommodation

It can be daunting for first-year students to find accommodation especially if they come from overseas. The accommodation office arranges accommodation for undergraduate and/or postgraduate students. They support student arrivals and departures and handle students’ queries. If you are a naturally organised person with strong interpersonal skills, you could thrive in this field. You’ll find the best opportunities here.

Careers services and employability

Being involved in career services will give you the opportunity to help students find jobs after graduation. You could advise students on how to improve their job applications, offer mock interviews, and connect them with potential recruiters. Perhaps the most rewarding part of the job is when a student receives an exciting job offer after receiving guidance from careers. For career opportunities, please visit this site.

Immigration and visa support

Most universities have an immigration or visa office to provide guidance to international students. As an adviser, you would respond to immigration queries and make sure that the students have all relevant documents for their visa applications. This could be a fantastic field to specialise in if you are a detail-oriented person and you enjoy supporting international students. Current job openings can be found here.

Health and wellbeing

According to the National Institute of Health and Care Research, three-quarters of mental health issues start by the age 24 and continue to cause distress throughout people’s lives. Universities are increasingly aware of students’ mental health challenges which include anxiety and depression. As a result, mental health and well-being are top priorities for several universities. Most universities have a student welfare team that provides signposting as well as support such as disability services, counseling, or peer support. Working in this field, you will be able to contribute to the physical and mental well-being of students and help them overcome everyday challenges. Here is a list of current student health vacancies.

Supporting students throughout their university studies is a rewarding professional area. Whether you are interested in admissions, careers, higher education administration, or student welfare, you will find a number of exciting and varied roles. If you are already working in student support, you could transition to a different area and gain further professional skills. If you have never worked in the Higher Education sector before, you might really enjoy working in the sector and supporting students from different backgrounds.
