Nanotechnology Jobs Profile

Chip on the finger of electronics

Nanotechnology is one of the most exciting innovations of the modern era. From the development of vaccines to combating climate change, small-scale technology has had a significant impact on how we live.

This job profile gives an overview of what it’s like to work as a senior lecturer in the fascinating world of nanotechnology and where to find jobs here at jobs.ac.uk.

What is nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology is a branch of science and engineering focused on the controlled manipulation of atoms, molecules and macromolecules to design and develop new materials, systems and devices to the nanoscale (1-100 nanometres – one nanometre is equal to one billionth of a metre).

This technology is used in everyday items such as suncream and smartphones as well as in the development of new medicines, alternative energy sources and fuel-efficient vehicles, to name a few.

Nanotechnologists come from a variety of STEM backgrounds. They conduct collaborative, interdisciplinary research in higher education, government research and pharmaceuticals, engineering, tech and manufacturing industries.

Senior Lecturer jobs in Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is mainly taught as a standalone subject at postgraduate level in the UK. However, this area also features in the majority of biosciences undergraduate programme curricula.

Senior lecturers in this field teach and supervise students at all levels while leading inter-disciplinary nanoscience research.

Duties include:

  • Leading, managing and contributing to nanotechnology research.
  • Supervising, training and mentoring research staff and students.
  • Publishing high-quality research in peer-reviewed journals
  • Presenting work at national and international conferences
  • Developing contacts with other research organisations, both academic and commercial.
  • Teaching and assessing courses at all levels through lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory classes, course work and personal supervision.

How to Become a Senior Lecturer in Nanotechnology

Senior lecturers are established academics with a recognised publication record and many years of teaching experience. To be promoted to this level, you would need to have the following qualifications, experience and knowledge:

Essential qualifications

  • First degree in either biosciences, engineering and technology, or physical/materials science.
  • PhD in nanotechnology/nanoscience/nanomaterials or related area (either from an engineering or scientific perspective, depending on the role).
  • A higher education teaching qualification.

Experience and knowledge

An excellent record of research, evidenced by a portfolio of high-quality publications of national and international standing would be essential. You would also need to demonstrate a clear research vision which complements existing activities, along with an ability to innovate curricula and inspire students.

You would be expected to supervise a team of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, so management and leadership skills would be essential.

What’s the pay?

Nanotechnology is a highly specialised area which demands a breadth of multi-disciplinary knowledge and experience. Therefore, senior lecturers in this field can command higher-than-average salaries of around £69,313 to £72,264 p.a.

What can it lead to?

If you choose to stay in academia, the next step would be to apply for a professorship. Promotion depends on the availability of roles at this level, the international standing of your research and the ability to lead and deliver inspiring nanotechnology education.

Where can I find jobs?

UK higher education is a world leader in nanotechnology research and there is demand for specialists from all backgrounds (both academic and commercial), particularly in environmental engineering, manufacturing and biomedical sciences.
