Pharmaceutical science lecturers contribute to a variety of teaching and research activities across medical, biosciences and life sciences Faculties and Schools.

Pharmaceutical Science Lecturing job duties include:

  • Delivery of lectures and laboratory classes to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

  • Supervision of student projects and work placements.
  • Undertaking individual and collaborative research relevant to the School or Faculty.

  • Presenting at conferences and events.

What qualifications and experience do you need?

A PhD in biochemistry, synthetic chemistry, pharmacology or a related area would be essential for pharmaceutical science lecturing jobs. You would also need to demonstrate evidence of high-quality postdoctoral research in a field related to pharmacology.

Experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level would also be essential. Although not always necessary, holding a Postgraduate Certificate of Academic Practice (PCAP) and/or Fellowship of Advance HE (formerly the Higher Education Academy) would be desirable.

Having a professional experience as either a biochemist or pharmacologist in industry would give your application the edge.

What’s the pay?

A lecturer in pharmaceutical science can expect a starting salary in the range of £44,414 to £52,851 p.a. depending on qualifications and experience.

What can it lead to?

After five to seven years as a lecturer, you could progress to senior lecturer or associate professor. Promotion depends on the quality of your research and teaching and your ability to help students into a career in pharmaceutical science.
