  • Leading research activities in the field of information systems and science.
  • Publication and dissemination of research.
  • Curriculum design and development.
  • Management and supervision of doctoral students and junior research staff.
  • Preparing grant proposals and applications.

What qualifications and experience do you need?

You would need to have a Ph.D. in information systems or information science or equivalent industry experience in a senior management role. Expertise in systems and networks, systems development, business analytics, information security and data science would be essential for a senior lecturer in information systems position. You would also be able to demonstrate a proven track record in information science research and collaboration, supported by published outcomes.

What’s the pay?

Senior lecturers in information systems can expect a starting salary in the range of £43,155 to £54,521 p.a.

What can it lead to?

On gaining experience as a senior lecturer, you could apply for a Reader position or a professorship. Promotion would depend on the quality of your teaching practice and research output and publication record.

Professor of Health Data Science

Health data science is a rapidly emerging sector which applies computational, statistical and epidemiological methods to vast and complex biomedical data sets. Professors in this field are highly experienced academics who lead research and teaching across a broad range of related disciplines.

Duties include:

  • Collaborating in research with other academics, clinicians, public bodies (such as the NHS) and industry.
  • Providing leadership and management to staff within the department.

  • Teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Supervision of doctoral students and junior academic research staff.

A professorship is considered the height of an academic career. However, professors can be selected to become heads of their departments or move into a Deanship. Senior-level academics in health data science will also have close links to relevant health and scientific organisations (both public and private) and may also carry out consultancy or advisory work.
