Senior Level Academic Jobs in Metallurgy and Minerals Technology

Senior academics in metallurgy and minerals technology lead the way in research focusing on the production and engineering of metals and other materials. Senior Lecturer in Metallurgy

Senior lecturers in metallurgy lead specialist teaching and research programmes. They are normally based in schools or faculties of engineering or materials science.

Duties:

  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students of materials science, engineering and metallurgy
  • Initiating, conducting and disseminating individual and collaborative research
  • Attracting and procuring research funding, including industry sponsorships
  • Curriculum and module design
  • Supervision of doctoral students and junior researchers

What qualifications and experience do you need?

A PhD in metallurgy or equivalent professional qualifications would be essential for an academic position at this level.

A proven track record of high-quality teaching and measurable research outcomes would also be essential.

You would also need to demonstrate the ability to forge strong links with industry partners.

What’s the pay?

A senior lecturer in metallurgy can expect a starting salary in the range of £53,353 to £61,823 p.a., depending on research and teaching experience.

What can it lead to?

After a number of years as a senior lecturer, the next step would be to apply for a professorship. Professorships make up a small proportion of academic jobs advertised and are highly selective.

Promotion would depend on your research and teaching record, as well as ability to enhance the global reputation of your institution.
